Outbound Contacts and “Unknown Contact” Conversations

Written by Semira K

If you do outbound outreach on Instagram, you will sometimes see conversations in your inbox called Unknown contact. This article explains what they are, why they exist, and what to do about them.

The short version

  1. You send a DM to someone who has never messaged you before.

  2. Instagram tells DM Tracker that a message was sent, but not who it went to. Instagram only shares a contact's username after that person replies to you. This is a privacy rule from Meta and it applies to every tool using the official Instagram API.

  3. So the conversation shows up in your inbox as Unknown contact.

  4. The moment the person replies, Instagram shares their username, and DM Tracker updates the conversation automatically.

What you should do: add your outbound contacts

Whenever you send an outreach DM in Instagram, add that person as a contact in DM Tracker (you know their username, you just messaged them). This matters for two reasons:

  1. Only you know it is an outbound contact. From Instagram's side, DM Tracker just sees "a message was sent". By adding the contact, you tell DM Tracker this is an outbound lead you're working on.

  2. Follow-ups need a name. A follow-up reminder for "Unknown contact" wouldn't help you. When you add the outbound contact, your follow-up board shows the real username, so you always know who to message next.

What happens when they reply

Nothing you need to do. When the contact replies, DM Tracker automatically matches the unknown conversation with the outreach contact you added and merges them into one contact, with the full conversation attached.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't DM Tracker just show the username right away?
Instagram doesn't share it until the person replies. Every tool on the official API works this way.

What if I don't add the outreach contact?
The conversation stays as "Unknown contact" until the person replies, and it won't appear on your follow-up board in a useful way. Adding the contact takes a few seconds and keeps your pipeline clean.

Do my regular inbound conversations show as unknown, too?
No. When someone messages you first, Instagram shares their username immediately, and they appear in your inbox by name.
